Course overview
The GIS & Spatial Data Analytics for NGOs and Development Projects Training Workshop equips development professionals with practical skills to collect, manage, analyse, visualise and interpret geospatial data for evidence-based planning, programme implementation, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment. The course demonstrates how Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial statistics, satellite imagery, GPS data and interactive mapping can help organisations understand where needs are greatest, identify underserved communities, allocate resources efficiently and measure the geographical reach and impact of development interventions.
Participants learn to integrate spatial data with socioeconomic, demographic, environmental, health, education, agricultural, humanitarian and infrastructure datasets to support project design, vulnerability assessment, service accessibility analysis, disaster risk mapping and development planning. The programme also explores AI-assisted geospatial analysis, cloud-based mapping, mobile data collection, spatial dashboards and automated geospatial workflows.

Frequently asked questions
1. 1. Who should attend this GIS and Spatial Data Analytics training?
The workshop is suitable for NGO project managers, GIS professionals, MEAL officers, monitoring and evaluation specialists, development planners, humanitarian response teams, research officers, public health specialists, agriculture and climate practitioners, and consultants working on donor-funded development projects.
2. 2. Do participants need prior GIS experience?
Basic computer skills and familiarity with development projects are sufficient for the introductory sessions. The workshop progresses from GIS fundamentals to practical spatial analysis, mapping, dashboards and selected AI-assisted workflows. Participants with existing GIS experience can undertake more advanced exercises.
3. 3. Which GIS software will be used during the training?
The programme can use QGIS, PostGIS, Python, KoboToolbox, Google Earth Engine and Power BI, depending on the learning objectives. ArcGIS and other enterprise platforms can be incorporated where participants or sponsoring organisations have access to the required licences.
4. 4. How does GIS improve NGO project monitoring and donor reporting?
GIS helps organisations demonstrate where activities are implemented, which communities are reached, how services are distributed geographically and where important coverage gaps remain. Spatial maps and dashboards can complement financial and results reports with geographically referenced evidence, provided the underlying data is accurate and appropriately interpreted.
5. 5. How long does the training workshop take?
A recommended duration is five days, combining instructor-led sessions, guided practical exercises, sector-based case studies and a capstone project. The programme can be customised for shorter introductory workshops or advanced GIS, remote sensing and spatial analytics training.
6. 6. Can the course be customised for a specific development sector?
Yes. The training can be tailored to health, education, agriculture, food security, water and sanitation, climate resilience, environmental conservation, infrastructure, livelihoods, humanitarian response, refugee support or multi-sector development programmes.
