Course overview
Climate change presents significant risks to ecosystems, infrastructure, agriculture, water resources, public health, livelihoods and economic development. Organizations need the capacity to understand climate hazards, assess exposure and vulnerability, develop adaptation measures, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience to current and future climate impacts.
This practical course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to assess climate-related risks and integrate climate considerations into policies, development programmes, infrastructure investments and organizational strategies. Participants explore climate science fundamentals, climate data interpretation, vulnerability assessments, adaptation planning, emissions reduction, ecosystem-based approaches, disaster risk reduction, climate finance and monitoring frameworks.
The workshop emphasizes applied learning through climate-risk scenarios, adaptation planning exercises, emissions inventories, resilience assessments and climate action plans. It also introduces GIS, remote sensing, data analytics and artificial intelligence applications for climate monitoring, risk mapping and decision support.
Course objectives
- Explain climate change science, greenhouse gas emissions, climate hazards and the implications of climate change for sustainable development.
- Develop a practical climate action plan incorporating priorities, responsibilities, financing options, implementation timelines and measurable performance indicators.
- Apply climate data, GIS, remote sensing and monitoring indicators to support climate risk analysis, adaptation planning and mitigation tracking.
- Identify greenhouse gas emission sources and propose practical mitigation measures, including energy efficiency, renewable energy and nature-based solutions.
- Develop context-specific climate change adaptation and resilience strategies for communities, organizations, ecosystems and infrastructure.
- Conduct preliminary climate risk and vulnerability assessments by analyzing hazards, exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity.
