The Civil 3D for Surveying, Terrain Modelling and Earthworks Training Workshop equips surveyors, civil engineers, construction professionals and infrastructure planners with practical skills in Autodesk Civil 3D for processing survey data, developing digital terrain models, generating contour maps, designing surfaces and calculating earthwork quantities. Participants learn to import survey observations, organise point data, create and edit surfaces, generate longitudinal profiles and cross-sections, analyse terrain characteristics, calculate cut-and-fill volumes, and prepare engineering drawings for construction and infrastructure projects. The workshop emphasises real-world applications in road construction, land development, site grading, drainage planning, earthworks estimation and engineering survey documentation.

Through guided practical exercises, participants develop workflows that connect field survey data with digital terrain modelling and earthworks calculations. The course also introduces quality control, drawing standards, data exchange and reporting practices relevant to engineering projects in Kenya and across Africa.

Course objectives

  • Import, organise, validate and process survey data using Autodesk Civil 3D.
  • Prepare professional Civil 3D drawings, surface models and survey deliverables for engineering, construction and land development projects.
  • Calculate cut-and-fill quantities, compare existing and proposed surfaces, and produce earthworks reports.
  • Generate longitudinal profiles, cross-sections and surface sections for surveying and preliminary infrastructure design.
  • Create, edit and analyse digital terrain models, including existing-ground surfaces, contours, breaklines and boundaries.

Who should attend

This workshop is designed for land surveyors, engineering surveyors, civil engineers, road engineers, construction engineers, earthworks contractors, quantity surveyors, site engineers, land developers, GIS professionals, CAD technicians, infrastructure consultants and technical officers working in government agencies, engineering consultancies, construction companies and infrastructure development projects. It is also suitable for graduates and professionals who want to advance from basic AutoCAD drafting to civil engineering design and terrain modelling workflows.

General notes

  • Training tools and software The workshop uses Autodesk Civil 3D as the primary software for survey data processing, surface creation, terrain modelling, profiles, sections and earthworks calculations. Supporting tools may include Microsoft Excel for survey data preparation and quantity analysis, AutoCAD drawing tools, CSV and TXT survey files, and LandXML for exchanging supported civil engineering data. Where available, participants can work with total station or GNSS survey exports, digital terrain datasets and sample road or land development projects. An appropriate Autodesk Civil 3D licence and compatible computer are required for the practical sessions.
  • Practical exercises and expected outputs Participants will import and validate survey coordinates, create COGO points and point groups, develop an existing-ground digital terrain model, generate contours, correct surface triangulation, prepare a topographic plan, create an alignment and longitudinal profile, generate cross-sections, model a proposed site grading surface, calculate cut-and-fill volumes and produce earthworks reports. Expected outputs include a Civil 3D project drawing, an existing-ground surface model, a contour and topographic plan, a longitudinal profile, cross-section drawings, a proposed grading surface, cut-and-fill quantity summaries and a final survey and earthworks documentation package.
  • Learn Autodesk Civil 3D for surveying, digital terrain modelling and earthworks estimation. This practical training workshop covers survey data processing, COGO points, surface creation, contour mapping, longitudinal profiles, cross-sections, site grading and cut-and-fill calculations for civil engineering, road construction and land development projects in Kenya and across Africa.

Frequently asked questions

Land surveyors, civil engineers, road engineers, site engineers, quantity surveyors, earthworks contractors, CAD technicians and infrastructure professionals who work with survey data, terrain models or construction quantities.
Basic AutoCAD knowledge is helpful because Civil 3D builds on AutoCAD concepts. Participants new to Civil 3D can learn the main workflows progressively, although familiarity with engineering drawings will make the practical exercises easier.
Yes. Participants learn to create comparison and volume surfaces, analyse excavation and embankment requirements, calculate earthwork quantities and generate volume reports. The results depend on the accuracy and completeness of the supplied survey and design data.
Yes. Survey observations can be imported when exported into supported formats and correctly structured. Participants learn to organise point numbers, coordinates, elevations and descriptions before generating terrain models.
