With so many training options available, it is easy to sign up for something that sounds impressive but does not fit where you want to go. A few honest questions up front will save you time and money.
1. Start with the outcome
Write down what you want to be able to do after the course. A clear outcome, such as "build maps for my team" or "manage project budgets", makes every other decision easier.
2. Check the learning format
- Classroom: best for hands-on practice and networking.
- Virtual: flexible, and good when travel is difficult.
- Self-paced: ideal for getting a feel for a topic before committing.
3. Look at the content, not just the title
Read the objectives and the topic list. They should match the skills you wrote down in step one.
Try a free introduction first. It is the cheapest way to find out whether a subject suits you.
4. Ask who will be teaching
Experienced trainers who work in the field bring real examples that make lessons easier to apply back at work.
